The World War 1 Silver War Badge. Authorised 12 September 1916, for men and women who were invalided out of the services having sustained a wound or contracted illness or disability in the course of the conflict. It applied to invalided WWI soldiers, sailors and airmen whether they were at a theatre of war or at home. They were individually numbered, on the reverse side. The badge was worn on civilian clothes to avoid harrassment by other citizens pursuing them with white feathers (a sign of cowardice, and generally reserved for those who refused to serve). It is a brooch mounted circular badge with the crowned royal cypher in the centre, surrounded by a circular inscription "For king and empire" and "Services rendered." This nickel reproduction is exact in every detail and is secured by two clutch pins.
